The Overrule: French Open Women's Quarter Finals

The shock exit of Justine Henin now leaves the door open for Serena Williams to complete the second leg of what she hopes will be a calendar year Grand Slam. Serena put on a dominating display against Shahar Peer in the fourth round and now meets Henin's conqueror Sam Stosur. Serena leads Stosur 3-1 in meetings between the two, including a win at this year's Australian Open which she went on to win. The same story looks set to repeat itself.

Caroline Wozniacki just about fought her way past one Italian in Flava Pennetta but now comes up against another in Francesca Schiavone. The gritty 29 year old Italian is hoping to be the first woman from her nation to reach the last four of a Grand Slam in more than 50 years and she has the tools to do so against her younger opponent. Schiavone leads the head to head 1-0, a victory on hard court, and will be more at home on the red clay. Wozniacki is showing a lot of fight and determination, but in my estimation she is there for the taking in this tournament by a player brave enough to do so. Pennetta came close, Schiavone might tip the balance.

Elena Dementieva and Nadia Petrova meet in an all-Russian quarter-final with both needing no introduction. This is the 15th time the two will have met, the series tied at 7-7. They are split 2-2 on clay and Dementieva has won the last four meetings between the pair. Petrova has the edge on serve while Dementieva has the more complete ground game. In a match that on paper appears 50/50 with the recent historical edge falling Elena's way, we have to go with Dementieva at odds against.
