The Overrule: Wimbledon Fourth Round
By Sports MagicianWhen the draw for Wimbledon 2010 was made the potential for a number of blockbuster fourth round encounters was well and truly on the cards. Fortunately, most of the high profile players have negotiated their way to the second Monday of the tournament, and as viewers, we are in for a feast. Novak Djokovic/Lleyton Hewitt, Serena Williams/Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters/Justine Henin and Vera Zvonareva/Jelena Jankovic headline what should be a fantastic day's play.
David Ferrer is overpriced to take out Robin Soderling. The Swede leads the head to head 5-2, with their only meeting on grass coming way back in 2004, which Soderling won. Ferrer has only beaten Soderling on clay but he has a far better shot than the odds suggest. Wimbledon is playing as slow as it is ever has in its history and that is why we see far more rallies than we ever used to. Ferrer's return of serve is good and he will be smart enough to try and neutralise the Soderling serve and ensure that rallies are the order of the day. For that reason, we have to take the huge price on the Spaniard.
Belgium's finest meet on Monday and if the two previous matches they have played this year are anything to go by, we are in for a rollercoaster ride. Clijsters has prevailed both times, and on each occasion by virtue of a deciding set tie-break. There will be no deciding set tie-break this time around, although we're unlikely to see a 70-68 third set finish! Henin's serve has been faltering of late and if Clijsters continues to hit the ball as cleanly as she has on grass this season then she can go 13-12 up in their head to head.
Klara Zakopalova is having the best Grand Slam of her career and she can derail Kaia Kanepi in fourth round action. Neither player had ever been past the second round of Wimbledon up until the past week and now one of them will advance to Tuesday's last eight. Nerves are sure to be on show, although Kanepi has reached the last of the French Open. Both players hit the ball hard with little variety and it could turn into a real slugfest.
