Watford finished last season seven points above the drop zone thanks in large part to an excellent start to the campaign. As the season wore on Watford were dragged further and further into the relegation dogfight but eventually finished up a respectable 16th. However, one of the stars – or rather, the only star – of last season’s team, Tom Cleverly (on loan from Manchester United), will no longer be able to help Watford in their fight for survival. The 20-year-old midfielder is likely to be loaned out to another Premier League club or a top tier Championship club rather than Watford. Cleverly scored 11 goals in 33 appearances for Watford last season and his absence will be sorely missed.

Malky Mackay endured a tough first season in charge at Vicarage Road and his task is unlikely to get any easier during the coming campaign.
