Having came up with heroics to go from 7-0 down in the fifth game of the series (the series score was 3-1 to Tampa at the time) to seal a dramatic 8-7 victory at the bottom of the ninth the Red Sox went into last nights game fully focused on taking this series to a decider and they sure delivered on that by winning 4-2 on the back of a hard working start from injury hampered Josh Beckett and a brilliant bullpen display. It is very clear that the momentum lies firmly with the Red Sox now as they have the experience when it comes to these pressure cooker games.
Jon Lester is arguably the best pitcher on the Boston staff right now and will be looking to go seven or eight innings tonight and if he manages to do this, I find it unlikely that the Rays can score more than three runs over the start if Lester is on his game.
When you look at Ortiz, Youkillis, Drew and Bay you have four men capable of hitting a lot of home runs. Pedroia, Kotsay and Lowrie are excellent at delivering base hits whilst Crisp is a devilishly quick base runner if he can get on. What we have left is Jason Varitek who some see as the weak link of the side but the captain delivered a solo shot at a crucial time last night and knowing that he has eleven post-season home runs in his career lets you know that he is more than capable of delivering at a time when it matters most. It is this daunting lineup which should really overpower Matt Garza tonight and even if they do not really perform to their best, Lester is equally capable of shutting down the Rays.
Put simply, I cannot look past a Boston win tonight. Momentum, form and all-round ability is on their side tonight.
