Article: MIDWEEK MAJORS 18/06/08
It's a great time for US sports on the whole at present and after watching the NBA finals last night and witnessing a fantastic performance from the Boston Celtics to become NBA champions, I am well and truly hyped about the remainder of the baseball season.
The match I will be offering my recommendations on this evening is the match up of Detroit Tigers playing at San Francisco Giants.
DETROIT TIGERS (Galarraga 6-2, 3.31) @ SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (Zito 2-10, 5.88)
In terms if the pitching set up and if you look at 2008 statistics, this looks like a bit of a lop sided affair to be frank. However, you have to remember Barry Zito had an abysmal start to the season going 0-8 early on and even had a small stint in the bullpen. As they say though, form is temporary and class is permanent and I personally do not believe that Zito is finished just yet and with minor recent improvements (2-2 in last five starts), there is still hope yet.
Galarraga has had a great start to MLB but you have to remember that he is still a rookie so we don't really know how he will react if put under pressure by this Giants offensive unit.
Detroit are hitting some good form of late and the Giants are looking pretty solid, but neither side is likely to be in the reckoning for post-season honours if we are being completely honest.
I do not see a massive difference in offensive standards because a number of players on both sides have underachieved but if Zito can maintain good command and gets run support then I do not see any reason why he cannot prove to be excellent value to get his third win of the season. It is about time the Giants made home field advantage count.
MEN TO WATCH
Marcus Thames LF (.256, 13 HR, 29 RBI) Detroit Tigers
Aaron Rowand CF (.310, 8 HR, 38 RBI, 1 SB) SF Giants
DETROIT TIGERS 33-38
SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS 31-41
Pitching career stats:
Armando Galarraga (6-2, 3.65) Detroit Tigers
Barry Zito (115-86, 3.76) SF Giants
RECOMMENDATION - 3 Pts stake on SAN FRANCISCO @ 2.46 Bet365
