Article: MIDWEEK MAJORS
ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (Owings 6-7, 5.15) @ WASHINGTON NATIONALS (Lannan 4-9, 3.60)
The Nationals have the worst record in the entire of Major League Baseball. They do not have the worst record because they have the worst pitchers, it is really because their offensive is generally very weak. In fact Washington have score the lowest amount of runs (326).Good pitching performances are so often unrewarded by the batters, and this can have a really demoralising effect on team morale.
The D-Backs began the season in terrific form. They were hitting well as a unit, pitching effectively throughout the rotation and things were really clicking into gear. The man pitching for them tonight started terrifically and after his start against Colorado Rockies on May 14th, he was an impressive 5-1 (3.81) but he, like his team has had a bit of a bad trot. He has been rested since June 27th because of a strain on his gluteus muscle, and the break may well do him good. The D-Backs are leading NL West still so have it all to play for, so it is testament to what a great start they had to the season that they are still up there.
With two wins in a row, The D-Backs will be wary of a false dawn but no doubt extremely confident of a victory against a team entirely destitute of confidence right now. The Nationals by contrast lost six straight.
It is difficult to imagine a high scoring contest because they are pretty rare in Washington and Lannan has been pretty effective at restricting masses of runs this year to date.
