Article: MLB SUPER SUNDAY
Another terrific card tonight has thrown up two matches for me. All of my attention is on NL West where the Rockies play in San Diego and the Dodgers play at the D-Backs.
COLORADO ROCKIES (Francis 4-8, 5.36) @ SAN DIEGO PADRES (Peavy 9-9, 2.86) 9.05pm UK Time
Brutal offense with ropey pitching meets blunt offense and ace pitching. What a battle this could provide for the viewer.
Jeff Francis is having a bad season for sure but it was not so long ago that he was the staff ace at Colorado, he seemed to get pelted a lot early on in contests which shattered his confidence. He improved in that he is 3-3 from his last ten starts with a 4.53 earned run average.
The question is 'Can the Padres score the runs to back their pitcher up?' and all too often, the answer is no.
Jake Peavy rarely gives up more then three-four runs and usually pitches quite deep into the game so is a general manager's dream, but his win-loss record is equal for a reason, he gets minimal support.
Quite simply this is a value call because I see the Rockies as an in form hitting unit running into a Padres unit merely floating by. With the Dodgers and D-Backs beating on each other this is a great chance.

Oddly, despite the big win-loss record difference, these two pitchers are of comparable quality. Derek Lowe has been a terrific pitcher a long time now and so has his counterpart for this evening, the metronomic Brandon Webb.
Both teams have threatened to take control of the NL West and one would suspect that one of them will go on to win, assuming either or hits enough form to see off the looming threat of the Rockies who are just six games back on the lead now. D-Backs lead the way, but the Dodgers could still go on a run, especially with Manny Ramirez in thir ranks.
The Dodgers victory last night was very important and proved that they are still alive and willing to fight to salvage their stop-start season. Manny can't do it all though, it will take support from the other bats and some good pitching(which they have generally had), but mainly the runs support.
Brandon Webb is a great pitcher that's for sure but he is human, and was recently knocked about by the often blunt Padres which was a real shock. If Lowe gets into his groove he is just as good and we could have a pitching duel worth shouting about. I wouldn't expect masses of runs tonight.
Side with the value and back the Dodgers to go back-to-back.
MEN TO WATCH
