Article: Football League Weekend
NORWICH CITY V SHEFFIELD UNITED
20th September - 15:00 GMT
I am of the opinion that Norwich are a pretty poor team and will be very likely to be languishing in lower-mid table for much of the season and may well even flirt with the notion of relegation. With a patchy squad and a manager with a less than stellar track record in Glen Roeder I find it hard to see how they can compete with the better teams in the Championship, and I consider their opponents this Saturday as being a team very much in the hunt for promotion.
Sheffield United have endured a pretty so-so start to this season, which was hardly helped by being drawn against Birmingham away on the opening day of the season. That particular match being a keenly contested one that was settled by a Kevin Phillips winner right at the death, ouch.
With the season starting to take a little shape, I think the Blades will look to prove that they are up to the challenge this season by getting an away win on Saturday. Norwich lost at home against QPR in midweek and this was despite the visitors having just ten players on the park, this is a comparable fixture.
With attacking options aplenty with Darius Henderson, Billy Sharp and the deadly James Beattie in their ranks it is easy to see why the bookies liked Sheffield United in the ante-post markets and so did I. A difficult start can be brushed aside once you get into some sort of winning rhythm and I expect that this could be kick started here with an away win at a tasty price of 3.
RECOMMENDATION - 2 Points on Sheffield United @ 3 (Stan James, SkyBet)
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY V IPSWICH TOWN
20th September - 15:00 GMT
Who has the leakiest defence out of these two? Well this is actually of secondary concern to me because in the total goals market, it matters not who concedes or scores the goals, just merely that there is goals.
Sheffield Wednesday matches have yielded twenty two goals in six league matches so far at a rate of 3.67 goals per game, and Ipswich Town matches have yielded seventeen goals in six matches at a rate of 2.83. Herein lies my reasoning as to why overs is a cracking bet.
Ipswich Town would appeal in the match betting if it wasn't for their god awful track record in away matches over the past couple of seasons. They seem to have purchased well over the summer and look set to have a decent season whereas it is difficult to judge where Wednesday might be because they made a terrific start to the season, only to be thumped 6-0 by Reading in midweek.
I'll stick to overs merely because I cannot trust Ipswich away.
RECOMMENDATION - 3 Points on Over 2.5 Total Goals @ 1.91 (Sportingbet
MILLWALL V CHELTENHAM TOWN
20th September - 15:00 GMT
This is very much a match of teams going in completely different directions. Millwall have made a very solid start to the season and have proved more than up to their mettle. They look like a team that works well within its limitations in order to get results.
Cheltenham by contrast have been seen as the whipping boys by many so far this season and they could be ripe for another beating to be quite frank.
If we look at two teams that both sides have played and compare how each has performed it may give a slight indication of the respective qualities of the two teams. Both teams have played Hartlepool United and Leicester City. Millwall beat Hartlepool 2-0 at home and then went on to win 1-0 away at Leicester, whereas Cheltenham lost 4-1 away to Hartlepool and 4-0 at home to Leicester. Quite an astonishing difference in fortunes I think you'll find.
The only danger for me here is that Martin Allen has just recently taken over the reins at Cheltenham which often provides a boost for the side but they've had their fortunate opening win under the new manager already by beating Bristol Rovers at home in midweek. This will be an entirely different prospect at the Den.
I fancy that this could well be the banker bet of the weekend in the football.
RECOMMENDATION - 3.5 Points on Millwall @ 1.75 (Bluesq )
BRENTFORD V LINCOLN CITY
20th September - 15:00 GMT
This match sees one of the genuine promotion hopefuls of the division in Brentford take on a team of relegation candidates in Lincoln.
Brentford have settled into the new season well and are unbeaten at home over three matches, Lincoln by contrast have lost each of their three away matches. It is an early pattern granted, but a telling one all the same.
Brentford have got probably the best defence in the division and this can be seen already somewhat by the fact that they have only conceded two goals this season so far in the league. Lincoln do not have the keys to unlock the defence because their own respective attack is nothing to be feared.
Peter Jackson could do a good job as boss at the Imps this season but it is likely to be tough going and there will be much easier days than this one I can assure you.
Stick with the home side.
RECOMMENDATION - 3 Points on Brentford @ 1.83 (Bet365, Bluesq , William Hill)
