Article: The Champion Hurdle
The Champion Hurdle
By Profit SwingThe Champion Hurdle is the feature race of day one of the Cheltenham festival which draws ever nearer with each passing day (hooray). This is a hugely competitive market with many horses being backed and tipped up. I do feel one horse is significantly overpriced and I think will start about half his odds available now come the big day. The horse in question is the Alan King trained Medermit which is why we really need to add him to our Festival Portfolio.
The horse was last seen thrashing reigning Champion Hurdler Punjabi in the big Haydock Trial last month. The press were quick to say that Punjabi underperformed but I am not so sure and also feel that Medermit did not like the soft ground and was not fully wound up making his victory all the more impressive.
Medermit was a narrow second in last year’s Supreme Novice Hurdle to Go Native who is third favourite for this year’s race after winning the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle and the big Christmas Hurdle at Kempton. I do not think there will be much between these two and they may well fight out the finish. I do think that Alan King's Festival record as well as the price differential means Medermit must be the call and have been informed since the Haydock win the horse has thrived and is now in serious work.
We need to take this price now as when the Festival preview nights start I am informed that both the trainer and Choc Thornton the jockey will be giving this one rave reviews which in itself will move it in quickly.
