This Week's Golf
By Profit SwingThe US Open at Pebble Beach
Forget the monster that is the World Cup for a second my friends as the greatest golf show on earth arrives at Pebble Beach on Thursday, the US Open.
The course is firm and fast, the rough is brutal, the greens are hard and treacherous and Tiger and Phil Mickelson are missing three out of every four fairways.... I can't wait.
Changing tack slightly, set your Skyplus for the documentary on the Tiger at 10pm channel four on Thursday. Particularly those who feel I have been harsh on him recently. It will reveal some deeply unpleasant sides to his character that will mean you will not be cheering him on in the near future. I hope the grovelers amongst the Sky Team judge the mood and go easy on the Tiger worshiping as it is looking in very poor taste now!
More importantly you cannot miss fairways regularly and win US Opens so sorry Tiger not this week. He is coaching himself at the moment with his entourage of crawlers and do you really think one of them will say, "It looks like your trying to hit it too hard boss" no thought not.
Phil Mickelson is now joint favourite but like the Players Championship I think his all action style will get him into trouble. I still feel he is the man to beat at St Andrews next month but not here this week.
So that is the two favourite out so who is going to win? One man I think will have a huge week is the Players Champion Tim Clark who on most US Open tracks is just too short (I mean off the tee not a criticism of his stature). Pebble Beach is long but it is firm and has downhill holes so length off the tee though an advantage is not essential. Clark now has belief married to a massive ability and he will grind it out for four days better than most.
Pick: 1 point EW 1/4 1,2,3,4,5,6 Tim Clark 66.0 Bet365
Apart from Westwood Robert Allenby is the most consistent performer in World Golf at the moment and he is five times the price. Allenby is driving it very straight and playing the best mid irons in Golf, if he putts well this week he could well take this.
Pick: 0.5 point EW 1/4 1,2,3,4,5 Robert Allenby 90.0 Sky Bet
Brian Davis has two second places on two tough courses and has said how confident he is of a big week this week. The bookmakers do not rate his chances but I do
Pick: 0.5 Point EW 1/4 1,2,3,4,5,6 Brian Davis 201.0 Totesport
Our final selection is Tom Lehman recent winner of the first seniors major of the year. Lehman is playing superb and is still competitive. We have seen veterans playing well recently in majors and this guy’s price is treble what it should be. He will love the difficult conditions, which may sicken off some of the younger players.
Pick: 0.5 Point EW 1/4 1,2,3,4,5 Tom Lehman 300.0 Sky Bet
My idea of the winning score would be three over par. It is going to be a great week, do not forget about this Tournament so let the World Cup have your joint attention for four days. There will be six hours live coverage each day on Sky Sports
