Article: Deja Vu at Craven Cottage

e-mail to friend  print this article
Let's start off by going back nearly one year to the day - Liverpool are flying in the Champions' League and coasting in the Premier League; Fulham are struggling in the Premier League and have replaced their stalwart manager Chris Coleman with Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez.

Struggling for points, Fulham are desperate for a home result against Liverpool. Luckily for them, good old Rafael Benitez decides to do them a huge favour and send out what is essentially a blend of reserve and youth team players, resting his big guns for the Champions League. Fulham nick a tight match 1-0 and essentially safeguard their Premier League status.

One year on, and Lawrie Sanchez has been replaced by Roy Hodgson, after one of the most incompetent spells of management in the history of the Premier League.

When Hodgson was appointed as manager of Fulham, most fans shrugged their shoulders - slightly bemused at the appointment, Fulham fans have never once shown any signs of anger towards Roy. After all, how can you begrudge someone who was the grandfather in the Werther's Original advert?

More to the point, Liverpool face Chelsea in the Champions' League next week. In my opinion, Rafa will restrict the likes of Torres and Gerrard to the bench to protect them from the risk of injury. If Fulham are shrewd, they will start the game by throwing in some strong tackles and the likes of Gerrard and Torres will stay on the bench, even if Liverpool find themselves a goal down.

Although Craven Cottage has not been the quasi-fortress it has been in previous terms, recent home wins over in-form Aston Villa and Everton show that the potential for an upset is still there. Fulham have the bare bones of a decent mid-table outfit, which belies their current position of 19th. Although the spectre of relegation looms large, there is still a glimmer of hope, and you can be guaranteed a good run for your money with the likes of Brian McBride and Jimmy Bullard in your team.

History will repeat itself on Saturday and Fulham will get a result, but I would prefer to remain cautious and back them on the AH +0.5 @ 1.9

NJ's Recommendation:

4pts Back Fulham AH + 0.5 @ 1.9 (Generally Available)
