Gulbis joins 1.01 club
Latvian teenager Ernests Gulbis kicked off the week with a shocking case of the chokes against Argentina’s Jose Acasuso, somehow managing to throw away a 5-1 lead in the final. Acasuso managed five consecutive games at that stage, as Gulbis crashed out of the first round of the Toronto Masters, losing 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-5.

GUBBED!Federer slide continues
World no. 1 Roger Federer continued his poor form this year against Frenchman Gilles Simon, as he crashed out in the second round of the Toronto Masters. Having been given a bye through to the second round, many were predicting an easy victory for Federer, and the Swiss looked to be on course for an easy win when he won the first set 6-2. However, after saving break points, Simon fought back to win the second set 7-5, and the match went into a deciding set.
Most observers assumed that the second set was a mere blip for Federer and that the third set win would still be a formality, especially when he went a break up. However, once again Simon fought back to level the score, and was gifted the set 6-4 as he broke Federer to love, thanks to a slew of unforced errors. Simon took the match 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, and progressed to the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup before being overcome by Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer.
