Haas gets Mullered
Volatile veteran Tommy Haas exited the US Open after a less than distinguished defeat to Luxembourg qualifier Gilles Muller. Haas began the match as 1.19 jolly on Betfair, and looked to be in cruise control up until the third set, when the 30 year old lost his cool.
In their second round encounter, Muller hit a sumptuous cross court winner at 4-4 in the third set tie-break, which was called good. Haas begged to differ.
The German proceeded to vent his anger at British chair umpire James Keothavong, who refused to overrule (as this match was played on an outside court, there was no Hawk Eye facility). Shouting "Are you insane?", Haas tried on his best John McEnroe impression, resulting in a total capitulation, and a memorable 1.01 gubbing for Muller. The Luxembourg native recovered from two sets down to win 2-6, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3, 6-3 and progressed to the third round, where he faced hotly fancied Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.
Muller once again fell two sets behind early on, and once again faced a third set tie-break to stay in the match. On this occasion, Muller saved match points from Almagro and once again recovered from two sets down to win in the fifth.
In the process of these unlikely comebacks, Muller has managed to gub a 1.01 shot (Haas) and 1.03 on Almagro as well. We wish him the best of luck in his fourth round match against Nikolay Davydenko...hmmmm...now there's a player you definitely want to be laying at 1.01!
