Article: NJ's Premier League Preview

After an impressive opening day win against Everton, Blackburn have rather fallen apart in their last couple of matches, having conceded four goals against both West Ham and Arsenal. Meanwhile, Fulham are coming off the back of impressive victories against Bolton and Arsenal, and they are playing with as much confidence as they have done since Chris Coleman shepherded the team into ninth position in their debut PL season. Blackburn look like a total shambles at the moment and the prices are all wrong, with Blackburn generally available at evens. With both teams heading in opposite directions, Blackburn simply must be opposed here.

Portsmouth travel to Manchester City after a maiden UEFA Cup win against Guimaraes, at the first time of asking. Both teams are fairly evenly matched - City are becoming an exciting team full of flair, whereas Pompey are generally tough to break down with some brutal physicality in midfield. New superstar signing Robinho is expected to add a cutting edge for Man City, but Portsmouth are exactly the type of team that he will have never faced before in La Liga, and he should expect to leave the field with a few bumps and bruises. I feel the two teams could cancel each other out here so I am plumping for the draw.

Spurs are an over-rated shambles of a team right now, and an unconvincing UEFA Cup win against Wisla Krakow means that people backing them to take care of Wigan at odds-on are taking a leap of faith. I would much prefer to take over 2.5 goals once again with Spurs. Their defence is a joke but their attacking potential is second to none. Four out of their five games so far this season have finished 'overs', so 1.87 is a very decent price.

They say that in derbies, form goes out of the window, but it's hard to ignore the case for backing Aston Villa at 2.4 against local rivals West Bromwich Albion. Aston Villa are unbeaten in their last 14 league and cup matches against WBA, and are serious challengers for fifth place this season. The cutting edge of Agbonlahor and Young should be far too much for a brittle WBA defence, and I'm expecting Villa to continue their excellent recent away record.

Bolton look a very weak side with the likes of Johan Elmander out through injury. Potentially, they are an exceptional side given their resources, but as mentioned before in this column, Gary Megson's track record doesn't offer much hope for Bolton fans and it would not surprise me to see him leave sooner rather than later. The days when Bolton used to seriously threaten Arsenal with tactics better suited to a boxing ring than a football pitch are long gone, and Arsenal have the form and confidence to see them off with ease.
