Can Federer Pull Out a Big Performance at The US Open?
With the best days of his career seemingly behind him, it is no longer a question of 'who can beat Roger Federer?' but rather 'how many more Grand Slams can Roger Federer win?'The Swiss Maestro is going to go down as one of the all-time greats to play the game with his 16 Grand Slam titles but the emergence of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the past few years has meant Federer has not ranked as world number 1 since May 2010. Those looking at the US Open tennis final betting wouldn't be totally surprised if he didn't feature, something that was unthinkable not so long ago.
A good question many are asking is 'who will win more Grand Slams in the rest of their careers: Federer or Andy Murray?' This is a really thought-provoking question; Federer's career is slowing down, not producing the great results they used to but Murray has perennially been on the edge of glory, not yet managing to find that illusive Grand Slam.
The pair has met twice in Grand Slam finals (the only two times they have met in Grand Slam competitions), in the 2008 US Open and the 2010 Australian Open. These are both the last times Federer has won those tournaments, the Australian Open being the last of all the Grand Slams he has won. The 2011 US Open final betting indicates he may not add another this year.
Despite Murray leading their overall head-to-head, Federer has always been the big game player. Will he be able to add a final Grand Slam to his career at Flushing Meadows this year?
It has traditionally treated him well, winning five consecutive years from 2004 to 2008 but Nadal and Djokovic have since discovered how to beat him. To pull off a final hurrah, Federer will need to rethink his game and thoroughly analyse the play of others.
