Adams Leaves Relegated Sheffield United
Micky Adams has been sacked as manager of Sheffield United. The news comes as no surprise after Adams led the Blades into League One following relegation from the Championship. Adams, a lifelong United fan, had initially stated he would like to stay at the helm and guide the club back into the second tier of English football. However, after talks with chairman Kevin McCabe on Tuesday, it was decided that Adams would be relived of his duties and dismissed. The club helped few fans win football bets with their poor form this season, which culminated in their descent into the the third tier of English football.
Adams, who left Port Vale to take over the reigns at Bramall Lane, was the club’s third manager of the campaign after Kevin Blackwell was dismissed and Gary Speed departed to take over the Wales national team. Adams won only four of his 24 games but the timing of the decision comes as a bit of a shock as the Blades look for stability in League One. Sheffield United will be looking for a new manager who has experience of promotion as they look to return to the Championship at the first attempt.
Adams’ departure sparks new changes at the club after chief executive Trevor Birch stepped down from his role but will stay at the club as a consultant.
United are now looking for Adams’ successor with plenty of managers on the market. Former Watford manager and football betting favourite Aidy Boothroyd, who managed Colchester at League One level, is free after being sacked by Coventry. Ex-Blackburn boss Paul Ince has experience of League One with MK Dons and Notts County while Gordon Strachan is also available. Chris Hughton has been made the early favourite as he looks to re-ignite his impressive career after his sacking from Newcastle.
To make matters worse for the Blades, Stephen Quinn, the club’s player of the season, has been rumoured with a move away from Sheffield. Ched Evans, a £3million signing from Manchester City, may be moved on to recapture some of his hefty transfer free paid for the striker while midfielder Nick Montgomery has been linked with a move to Leeds.
