Westwood Eyes Open Success

New world-number one Lee Westwood will be hoping he is still atop the rankings by the time The Open comes around in July and the 39-year-old heads to the Royal St George's Golf Course in Kent. The Englishman is still
looking to pick up that first major win of his career, and would surely love nothing more than to win the Open this year and end that drought. Last year's Open at St Andrews saw Westwood record his second runner-up finish at a major in three tournaments and further extend the winless run, with South African Louis Oosthuizen taking the title.

Last year's second place finish came a year after he tied for third and six years after his fourth place. All the signs appear to be pointing to Westwood lifting the famous trophy but it will be far from as easy as just turning up and collecting the trophy and the British Open odds reflect this. There will always be question marks surrounding Westwood's mental strength when it comes to the major tournaments after coming so close on so many occasions.

Those critics won't go away until the Englishman finally picks up that maiden win, but Westwood is certainly in the sort of form where he will feel confident of achieving something this year. After romping home at the Indonesian Masters last week, Westwood will now head to South Korea to compete in a strong field at the Ballantine's Championships. If Westwood can go on a strong run between now and late-July, then the Englishman will certainly be among the favourites when the Open starts.
