Monty Eyes Ryder Cup Repeat
Colin Montgomerie has conceded that he would be happy to captain the Ryder Cup team if asked to reprise his role for the 2014 match.Montgomerie led the European side to victory at Celtic Manor in 2010 last October in what was one of the most competitive matches of recent times.
Monty's side ran out 14 1/2 to 13 1/2 victors in Wales thanks to a last gasp point from Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell which meant they reclaimed the trophy after previously losing it in 2008 at Valhalla. Those following the golf betting will know just how thrilling a contest it was.
Immediately after the match, the Scot claimed he saw the role as a strictly one-off undertaking and couldn't see himself leading the side again. However, he appears to have had a change of heart and says he would now considering taking the role again, especially as its being played in his homeland.
Montgomerie has been one of Europe's most successful Ryder Cup players over the last two decades holing the winning putt in 2004 as well as winning eight European Tour Order of Merit titles.
However, his powers have declined in recent years, something reflected in the 2011 the Open golf betting, and when asked to captain the Ryder Cup side he understandably jumped at the opportunity and while admittedly not directly putting himself in contention for the role, he admits he would definitely considered it if asked.
"I wouldn't put my hat into the ring," he told Sky Sports News. "Yes, it is local, I live five miles away and being Scots I suppose there is a little bit of a push for me to be captain again - whether the Tour want that or not I'm not sure.
"But, at the same time that I won't be throwing my hat in the ring, if someone asks me I won't refuse."
