SATURDAY sees the 202nd running of the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, with the market led by a very short-priced favorite in the shape of ST NICHOLAS ABBEY. 2.5 looks poor value in what could turn out a competitive renewal and despite the allure of ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL, it could pay to forgive CANFORD CLIFFS (Newmarket, 15:05) despite his blip two weeks ago.  Richard Hannon was not too downbeat after the up-and-coming stable star had his colours lowered in the Greenham Stakes by stable companion DICK TURPIN, and there has been plenty of money for the colt this week.  He showed a superb turn of foot at Newbury to shoot clear but blew his chance by taking the scenic route to the line.  If

Richard Hughes can produce him a little later on Saturday – and keep him straight – he could prove a value each-way alternative to emphasize that he really is the best horse Hannon has ever trained.

In what has already been a great early season for Hannon, he also has a live hope in the 1,000 Guineas on Sunday with POLLENATOR (Newmarket, 15:20).  The daughter of Motivator is owned by the Royal Ascot Racing Club and strong vibes from Everleigh have had the bookmakers running for cover.  Considered to have a bright future over trips beyond a mile, she nevertheless has plenty of pace and has been reported as working brilliantly in preparation for Sunday's Classic.

Surely it's not possible for the yard to win both races over the weekend but, judged on the strength of recent support for both horses, punters could do worse than consider an each-way double.  And who knows, there could be a very big party in East Everleigh on Sunday night.

Sir Michael Stoute is always to be noted in three-year-old handicaps and RACY (Newmarket, 16:15) can come on for his seasonal debut over course and distance last month.  He lines up in a hugely competitive 6f sprint on Saturday and is expected to rate better than his current mark of 87.

About Richard Dunwoody

One of the greatest jockey’s in British racing history, Richard Dunwoody broke the previous record for the greatest number of career wins for a jump jockey of 1678 when Yorkshire Edition won at Wincanton. Richard went on to ride a career total of 1699 winners. That mark was finally beaten by Tony McCoy in August 2002. As an amateur jockey, he rode his first winner on Game Trust at Cheltenham in May 1983, and the following spring rode a four-timer at Hereford as a 7lb claimer. He was champion jockey for three seasons and is one of only four post war jockeys to have captured the illusive triple crown of the Gold Cup (Charter Party 1986), the Champion Hurdle (Kribensis 1990) and the Grand National (West Tip 1986 and Minnehoma 1994). Richard also rode more than 100 winners in ten consecutive seasons.  His best season saw him ride 197 winners in 1993/94. Yet, to most, he is most well known for his partnership with the iconic Desert Orchid. The pair won seven races, including the King George V1 Chase in 1989 and 1990.

Richard has undertaken various expeditions since hanging up his boots, including a 350-mile cross-country ski race to the Magnetic North Pole and in January this year completed an amazing 673 mile trek to the South Pole, something he considers his greatest ever achievement.

He joined the BBC racing team at Aintree this year, writes a column for the Daily Mirror pull-out section on Saturdays and is a consultant to the British Racing School at Newmarket, where he coaches young and up-and-coming jockeys.
