First Season Sires To Follow

Each and every year there is always considerable interest in the new sires that come on the scene and this year’s crop of first season sires look to be at first glance a group that are going to be around for quite some time.

They will be even more under the microscope this week as all of them will be having their first Royal Ascot runners. Leading the way in the table is the son of Acclamation Dark Angel who has made a very promising start to his stallion career. He has been well represented on course with 31 of his progeny so far seeing action on the track, with nine of that group having won to provide 13 winners so far for Dark Angel. He should be well represented at the Royal Meeting this week especially in the 6F Coventry Stakes where he could have as many as four runners representing him. He’s yet to have a stakes winner but that could be put right this week if his
most successful offspring so far Lily’s Angel runs in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. She has already scored three times and although losing her unbeaten record at Beverley recently this speedy filly should give a good
account of herself. Dark Angel himself a very speedy two year-old certainly appears to be imparting those traits to his offspring. Those following the online horse racing betting should keep an eye on his offspring.

Teofilo has not had as many representatives of his on the racecourse as Dark Angel but like Dark Angel he didn’t race beyond his juvenile career. Unbeaten as a youngster, winning the Dewhurst on his last appearance on a
racecourse, he is more stoutly bred than Dark Angel being a son of Galileo. Only 13 of his progeny have seen the course so far but the results have been impressive with that number producing five individual winners and the
winners of six races, the best of these is undoubtedly Teolane, who has already won twice and landed a first stakes victory for his sire. Expect his name to feature prominently in the horse racing results UK from now on.

You can see the progeny of the two leading first season sires going different ways in their careers – Dark Angel getting speedy precocious types whereas Teofilo’s progeny will make up into more mature middle-distance horses. But in fact this week we may get a head-to-head between the two leaders in the race to be leading first season sire as the two horses that have contributed most to their tallies – Lily’s Angel (Dark Angel) and Teolane (Teofilo) – go head to head in Royal Ascot’s Albany Stakes.

Dark Angel and Teofilo may lead the standings at the moment but they won’t have it all their own way and other first season sires that have made good starts to their stallion careers include Dutch Art, Red Clubs and Amadeus
Wolf. Pay particular attention to the runners from the Kevin Ryan stable sired by the last of those named there – Amadeus Wolf – as he trained the sire and has a particular affinity with his offspring.
