49ers And Smith Fighting For Their Future
In the years since Alex Smith was chosen as the number one pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, both he and the San Francisco 49ers have on the whole endured a time to forget, with Smith failing to live up to his billing as a number one draft pick and San Francisco failing miserably to reach the play-offs despite competing in arguably the weakest division. As the 49ers look forward to their must win fixture against Seattle, head coach Mike Singletary has decided that Smith is going to get one last chance to show that he can be a decent NFL quarterback for the 49ers in the knowledge that if the player doesn't prove himself in the sort-term, he'll be traded or, more likely, released.
Whilst Alex Smith will no doubt be delighted that he is getting his starting position back from Troy Smith, he would surely have wanted to do just that before the 49ers found themselves in such a horrendous position. With their season currently at 4-8, they know that they have to defeat the Seahawks and then go on to win the rest of their regular season games just to stand a slim chance of getting into the play-offs. The Super Bowl 2011 betting odds suggest they won't manager this.
With 49ers fans beginning to show their intense displeasure at Mike Singletary, Smith has long been a byword for failure and disappointment for even the most passionate of 49ers fans and he'll only be able to change that if he can lead the Niners to a winning season, although the 2011 Super Bowl predictions suggest that won't happen this season.
However, with the odds of winning their remaining games massively stacked against the Niners, and Smith already failing in the past to grab firm hold of opportunities to show his apparent potential, the immediate future continues to look pretty bleak for the long suffering 49ers fans.
