Wilkinson Returns To Toulon
England fly-half Johnny Wilkinson has returned to his club side Toulon ahead of England’s 6 Nations clash against France in nine days’ time.Wilkinson has so far found his first team opportunities limited during the tournament so far because of the performances of his former Newcastle team-mate Toby Flood, and has now been told to return to his club side to maintain his match fitness.
The former Newcastle man will regain his position as the highest ever points scorer if he gets on the scoresheet against France. His predator rugby boot has helped him score 1187 points in international rugby, one behind New Zealand fly half Dan Carter.
England’s record points scorer has come off the bench in both games so far and scored a crucial penalty which helped see off Wales in the opening game of the tournament. His fitness in recent years has been a constant worry for England, but head coach Martin Johnson is said to be happy for Wilkinson to return to France.
Wilkinson recently described his new role on the sidelines as “hell”, but insists he can still contribute to a successful England side.
“Being on the bench brings new lessons for me'' he said.
''My desire to play for England is still as great as it was when I won my first cap. I am now in a role where I contribute slightly differently.
Toulon are keen for Wilkinson to return as they look to secure their play-off place in the Top 14 competition, and face 11th placed Agen on Saturday. The 4th placed club have secured the signing of fellow adidas boots wearer Matt Giteau on a two year contract, meaning Wilkinson will face competition for his spot at club level as well.
England Captain Lewis Moody is one of three players who will also return to their clubs this weekend. Moody will play for Bath this weekend ahead of the crucial match at Twickenham as he looks to prove he has fully recovered from a knee injury which has ruled him out of the first two games of the tournament, while Andrew Sheridan, who missed the Italy game with a back injury, looks set to play for Sale against Harlequins on Saturday. Blindside flanker Tom Croft will also appear for his club side Leicester.
