Tonga Still Hopeful of Progression
The Rugby World Cup has generated a few shock results and the defeat of Tonga by a spirited Canada team certainly will rank amongst them. The Tonga team began the tournament with the unenviable task of playing against New Zealand in the opening match at Eden Park. As expected the All Blacks enjoyed a comfortable victory with a final score of 41-10. The Tonga team were well beaten but they did show glimpses of quality rugby and were expected to improve in their following match against Canada.
Canada had other ideas. Although Tonga played some good rugby they were undone as Canada scored two tries in just 12 minutes to eventually win the match 20-25. The Tonga team were extremely disappointed with both the overall performance and the result and were determined to return to form in their next match against Japan.
Japan had suffered a huge defeat to New Zealand with a final score of 83-7 and were looking for an improved performance against Tonga.
The Tonga team played with passion and control and eventually ran out winners with the result of 31-18. Both teams could take positives from the match but the result meant the end of Japan’s hopes in the competition whilst Tonga still have a slim chance of progressing into the latter stages.
The final pool game for the men in Tonga World Cup Jerseys is against France and the bookmakers have the European team as firm favourites to win with best odds of 1/19 available. The Tonga team can be backed at 2/1 and the prices seem like an accurate representation of the chances of both teams.
Whilst Tonga will probably have to regret their poor show against Canada they will have plenty to take away from the competition and will build on the experience with a view to future tournaments.
