News: 1.01 GUBBED! by Nishant Joshi
Published: Monday, 15th September 2008
Every week, we bring you the 1.01 gubbings on Betfair, as players and teams complete Lazarus-style comebacks or simply take advantage of chokes of monstrous proportions as their opponents struggle to cross the finishing line. Goodwin Hunting
Murray Goodwin masterminded one of the more memorable comebacks in recent history, as he helped Sussex Sharks to win the Pro40 Division One title. Chasing 227 on a pitch helping the spinners, Sussex collapsed from 86/2 to 130/8, and looked dead and buried when no. 10 Mohammed Sami strode to the crease to join the former Zimbabwe international.
At this point Sussex were matched at prices up to 160.0 on Betfair, and justifiably so. However, with a spiralling run rate, Goodwin kept his calm and was ably assisted by tail-ender Sami, who ended up with 32 off 25.
Sussex were left needing 16 to win off Charlie Shreck's final over of the innings, which they narrowed down to four off the final ball. With Goodwin on strike, Nottinghamshire were still heavy odds-on to prevail, but Shreck's attempted yorker wasn't quite full enough and Goodwin played an extraordinary back foot shot to smash the ball for six over long-on, clinching the Pro40 title in Chris Adams' last match as captain.
