My love of
Australian rugby league can often border on the obsessive. ARL's
popularity in the land down under means that it is much more accessible
and media friendly than the English version which at times is treated
with absolute disdain by the Daily Broadswords.
Setanta Sports generally show 2 live matches per week in the UK in
addition to Origin and International matches. My intention is to find
and highlight value in this competitive arena.
I shall be concentrating on the live matches but if there's no value
there'll be no recommendation. Hopefully an opportunity will present
itself in one or more of the other matches.
The nature of the game means that injuries and suspensions are
inevitable so I'll be doing my level best to make sure that this column
is kept up to date with the latest news. So there you have it, each week
from round 8 to round 26, culminating in the Grand Final on Sunday
October 5th 2008, I’ll be doing my utmost to provide something
interesting and thought provoking with the ultimate aim of providing
profitable punting....
The Monsters of Melbourne play
host to the Newcastle Knights in the Monday Night Game this week and
should be up to winning but the Knights aren't without a chance here.
Being the number one team in the NRL brings with it great responsibility
to the representative season and they had an extraordinary eight players
involved in the test match on Friday night, just 72 hours previous. I'm
sure there's a few bruised bodies from that game and its going to be a
big ask to back up with another top class performance against a team
like Newcastle who now look to be headed in the right direction and
fresh off the back of a ten day break
The Knights play an expansive brand of footy whilst at the same time
having a great work ethic which we saw utilised to its best effect
against the Titans last week who threw the Kitchen sink at them but
still came away empty handed. If they can match Melbourne up front and
get plenty of go forward through buderus and gidley I'm sure they won't
disgrace themselves. Olympic Park is as tough as away pitches get and
the short in goal areas can be a nightmare for kickers but jarrod mullen
is as accurate as you can get in this department. Sure the Storm are
favourites and rightly so but I think a ten point start is worth taking
especially with this fixture being so close to the test match.
Good Luck
