Trading Room Event: NatWest Pro40 - Kent v Leicestershire at Canterbury 16:30

NatWest Pro40 - Kent v Leicestershire at Canterbury 16:30
Published: 12 Aug 08, By Nishant Joshi

Nishant Joshi trades the Kent v Leicestershire NatWest Pro40 match starting at 16:30 on 12/08/08. Nishant will be trading with a starting bank of 100pts.

9:05pm

Match has been abandoned, a waste of everybody's time. Oh well, I'm assure that they have permanent floodlights at the Rose Bowl for tomorrow's Pro40 match. No doubt it will rain cats and dogs then!

From a trading point of view, as we surmised early on that this was a potentially dodgy match due to the floodlights situation, our trading was minimal, our small green on Kent is voided because the match was not completed.

Take care and do join me once again tomorrow at 4:30pm for another trading session.

=====================

8:43pm

Umpires will confer at 9pm, to see if the wind has died down. Would it have been that much of a problem for the umpires to give a call to the ECB before the match and propose a shortened game? This incident is symptomatic of the bureaucracy and red tape in the game at the moment.

=====================

8:12pm

"Bad light stops play in a day/night, floodlit game."

Leicestershire struggling on 23/2 after 6 overs, need 10 overs for a completed match. Pretty farcical and I am pretty ashamed of the situation, as a cricket fan. We all saw it coming, we all knew they'd come off for bad light before the match was completed.

I can't even say I'm surprised at the ineptitude of the cricket officials. Possibly not the umpires' fault - ignoring the fact that Illingworth has had a shocker - but the ECB must do something to legislate for this. We're in the 21st century, we are supposed to be hosting the Twenty20 World Cup next year.

This is a total shambles and an embarrassment to the game.

=====================

8:05pm

Umpire Illingworth has just given Boeta Dippenaar out LBW in one of the most shocking decisions I've seen for a while. Maybe he should realise just how dark it is and take them off the field now? This is an absolute farcical situation at the moment.

=====================

7:45pm

Heavy rain but the batsmen are being kept on the pitch...the farce begins. My advice is to not leave yourself over-exposed if you decide to trade while the lights are still down. This is a potentially volatile trading situation so we'll stay away for now.

=====================

7:28pm

Kent have managed 226/7 off their 40 overs, which is a par score in my opinion. However, against this Leicestershire side, it should prove far too much.

The one mitigating factor is the wind, and the possibility of D/L being introduced. At the moment we have been involved only in a couple of tentative trades because of D/L concerns, and we are small green on Kent, with no loss on Leicestershire.

Our 1.35 lay was not matched, current price on Kent is 1.5 and drifting with the D/L concerns.

=====================

6:46pm

Azhar Mahmood out thanks to a great catch from Paul Nixon, meaning that we missed our lay by just a few ticks. Big wicket that, but Kent have some useful batsmen at no 8 and 9. Watch and wait, we have the same plan, lay at 1.35 for 20pts liability if it comes during the rest of the innings.

=====================

6:39pm

Kent 142/4 after 29 overs, trading at 1.5.

Lay Kent for 20pts liability at 1.35 if it comes until the end of the innings.

=====================

6:34pm

130/4 after 28 overs, Kent 1.7

Volatile time with Azhar Mahmood at the crease, he has the potential to take the game away from Leicestershire. The market favours Kent so it's best to keep minimal red on them for the time being. We'll green out for small profit at 1.7 now, back Kent for 20pts at 1.7.

=====================

6:21pm

Darren Stevens is out after causing a fair bit of damage.

Close our last trade, back Kent for 20pts at 1.58.

=====================

5:58pm

Another small lay of Kent for 20pts liability at 1.54, price is coming into something near Kent's SP, even though Sporting Index have their runs spread as 20 runs lower than the start. Look to clear liability on Kent if a wicket falls.

=====================

5:50pm

66/3 after 16 overs and we're having our first play of the day. Leicester are bowling reasonably well and Kent's batting looks relatively thin, especially if Key gets out soon. With Claude Henderson to come, Kent could struggle.

Lay Kent for 20pts liability 1.68.

=====================

5:37pm

Kent are 50/3 after Kemp getting out cheaply. I'm reluctant to get involved at all in this match at this stage, keeping in mind the possible/probable floodlight issues. Otherwise, usually Kent would be a small back at 1.9.

Plenty of time still left in the match so we'll keep our powder dry for now. The last thing we want is to have a bet which is later skewed out of proportion thanks to D/L and some suspect umpiring.

=====================

5:25pm

Kent are 41-2 off 10.3 overs, but my immediate concerns are with the windy conditions. Surely the umpires should have enough foresight to realise that without floodlights, it will be too dark to play when Leicestershire's innings starts?

I am deeply concerned that we will see another farcical match here. At the same time, if winds die down enough for the floodlights to operate, Leicestershire might be chasing down a D/L affected total, making Rob Key's decision to bat first all the stranger.

Get the match over before the sun goes down, be proactive and don't wait for the proverbial to hit the fan before faffing around.

=====================

5:09pm

Looks like I jinxed van Jaarsveld!

Kent are 33/2 after 7 overs, trading at 1.65. Justin Kemp has been quite disappointing this season, and it will be interesting to see how Kent cope, as their batting depth could well be tested here.

We will look to lay Kent if they hit 1.35 in the next 10 overs.

=====================

5:06pm

Kent are off to a slow start and have drifted to 1.5 on Betfair after Joe Denly was out caught behind, rather unluckily. 21/1 after 6 overs, with Kent's two best batsmen at the crease. Martin van Jaarsveld has been the best batsman in the country in the Friends Provident Trophy and we probably won't be opposing Kent while he's still in.

=====================

4:50pm

Nick Knight reckons that Duckworth-Lewis favours the team batting first. How did he get a job as an 'expert' commentator exactly?

I fully expect Kent to win this match, but from a trading point of view they are a lay-to-back proposition. We'll watch and wait for now.

Kent are 11-0 after 3 overs.

=====================

4:34pm

Kent win the toss and bat first. Bizarre situation unfolding here, as there are high winds at Canterbury which may hinder the lights going up later on in the evening - something to keep an eye out for.

Kent team:

Azhar Mahmood, JM Kemp, SJ Cook, RH Joseph, JC Tredwell, R McLaren, M van Jaarsveld, GO Jones, JL Denly, RWT Key, DI Stevens

Leicestershire team:

J Allenby, GJP Kruger, MAG Boyce, D du Preez, PA Nixon, JWA Taylor, J du Toit, RJA Malcolm-Hansen, CW Henderson, HH Dippenaar, MN Malik

Kent are missing Yasir Arafat but have excellent strength in depth. Their opening pair of Rob Key/Joe Denly should really be considered for England in ODI's and Twenty20's in my opinion.

Kent have won both of their matches so far, whereas Leicestershire have lost three and tied one match.

There is a clear gulf in class between the two sides, but Leicestershire are no mugs and have the players to create decent passages of play.

SP's: Kent @ 1.4, Leicestershire @ 3.45

Our starting plan will be to lay Kent at 1.2 in the first 15 overs.

Good luck all!

3:46pm:

Good afternoon everyone!

I am excited to present live Pro40 trading this week for Priceform.

In these trading sessions, we will look at a variety of different strategies, but the main ethos will be to let winning trades run, and cut losses as early as possible.

This is easier said than done, and only comes with experience.

I have found that the key to achieving long-term profit in any sport is total discipline and selectivity. As such, there will be events where we make a minimal amount of trades. The goal is to achieve consistent long-term profit in this trading room, and learn the mechanics behind trading on Betfair.

I will not make this out to be any more than it is - we will have the odd inevitable loss, but we will endeavour to keep any losses to a minimum, and I have no doubt that we will achieve a decent Return on Investment over time.

Please feel free to post any in-running queries and feedback in the cricket section at http://forum.priceform.com and I'll try to get back to you in a timely manner.

In the meantime, why not have a quick read of my Premier League previews at In the meantime, why not have a quick read of my Premier League previews here

Please do join me at 4:30pm when I will have the teams and first innings trading plan for you.

Look forward to seeing you then!
